FAQ on car registration

Which comes first, register a car or insure a car?

The first step is to take out valid motor vehicle liability insurance. After successful insurance, you can register your vehicle with the responsible authority. For a successful registration you need an insurance confirmation in the form of a coverage card, which you will receive from your insurance company.

Is it possible to register a new car without deregistering the old one?

That is possible. There is no legal regulation that prohibits multiple registrations per person. However, it should be noted that insurance and tax costs are incurred for each registered vehicle.

Does it take a long time to register a car?

The vehicle registration can usually be completed quickly, usually even within an hour - as long as the desired registration office for the vehicle registration is also open.

Can a car be registered to more than one person?

Yes – this is a co-ownership association. Both persons are entered as the vehicle owner in the registration document and share the legal responsibilities and obligations associated with the vehicle.

Can I register a car that doesn't belong to me?

It is possible for the car to be registered by someone other than the policyholder, provided there is a power of attorney. The holder and the policyholder do not have to be the same person.
